The Seafarer’s Kiss by Julia Ember is a bisexual retelling of The Little Mermaid, set in the Arctic Circle. It borrows from the original Hans Christian Andersen story, Viking mythology and Disney’s The Little Mermaid. Host Laura von Holt talks with author Julia Ember about various world legends about mermaids, all the ways Julia imagines mermaids might survive in an arctic climate, Julia’s background in medieval literature and Norse mythology, and her love of beluga whales. Listen to this intriguing discussion of the world of a dystopian Little Mermaid, and the process of writing a queer young adult novel.
